Ever since last November when energy company SSE announced an 8.2 per cent rise in gas and electricity costs it has been largely anticipated that the other ‘Big Six’ energy firms would follow suit and so it’s proved.
On Saturday, E.On became the sixth and final supplier to announce such measures, confirming that their customers would be hit by a 3.5 per cent price hike.
With the Big Six enjoying a 90% share of domestic customers, these price rises have had a big effect on a considerable number of families, leaving many desperately looking for ways of reducing their bills.
Making their home more energy efficient is an obvious solution. Buying new windows and doors is a great starting point as contemporary designs offer a high level of insulation, compared to the old single glazed option. Their next course of action should be to try and find a more affordable energy package.

Sainsbury’s Energy is a fixed-price tariff costing £1,316 annually that runs until April 2018 shielding customers from any intervening energy rises throughout that four-year period.
There are cheaper deals out there, but none that last for an equal amount of time and let’s face it, it’s inevitable that gas and electricity will become even more expensive over the next four years so it could well be a great safety guard.
